Down time

By Anna B.

Down time. Sam loved down time, especially the kind of down time that afforded her four or five days off base. And, she thought, god knows she needed some down time after the last mission SG1 had been on. Oh the mission itself had been routine, mind numbingly routine. Longer than normal too, mostly due to Daniel wandering off and being missing for 48 hours. Sam grinned as she thought about the look on Jack's face when they'd finally found Daniel. Surrounded by native women of course. But it was over and now she had time to spend with the man in her life. Alone. Usually they spent most of their down time with their friends. Not that she didn't love each and everyone of them, but sometimes she just wished they weren't so, she shrugged, so friendly. After all the relationship was still new and she craved time alone with him. They'd been together six months and were just now settling in being a couple. Which meant they no longer jumped on each other the minute they were alone. She kind of missed it. Their decision to take things slowly had flown out the window within the first two weeks. They'd stuck to the agreement not to, in his words, fool around, on the base. Well, she amended, most of the time they did. There been a couple of stolen moments on base, sneaking into one or the others quarters and that one time off world. She glanced across the table, yes, she thought, I think we've gotten the handle on this relationship. We're even managing to be discrete. Most of the time.

"Jack?"

He looked up from his paper, "Yes Sam?"

"Do you love me?"

Without hesitating he answered, "Yes I do."

Sam picked up her coffee, "Okay," she said taking a sip and picking up a section of the newspaper.

Jack watched her for a minute a puzzled look on his face, "Sam?"

"Yes Jack?"

"Do you love me?"

Sam smiled at him, "Very much."

He nodded and picked up his paper, "Okay."

They sat in silence drinking coffee and reading the newspaper, the radio playing softly in the background. Comfortable, settled. Jack finished the article he was reading and closed the paper, watching as Sam read her section. "Sam?"

"Yes Jack?"

"Why did you ask?"

"Ask what," she asked neatly folding the paper she'd been reading and setting aside.

"If I loved you?"

"Because," she answered, "we've never really discussed it you know. Being in love. "

"We haven't?"

Sam got up and poured herself another cup of coffee, "No we haven't. I'm not sure we've ever said it to each other."

"We haven't? Are you sure? I mean, not even when-"

"Not even then."

"Really?"

"Really," she smiled at him, "it's okay you know. I don't need to hear the words to know how you feel. You've shown me that in a thousand little ways."

He stood up and walked over to her, wrapping his arms around her, "Thank you for putting up with me. And showing me I could love again."

"Anytime," she murmured, as she answered as she turned to face to him.

Jack leaned down as brushed her lips with his, gently at first and then winding his fingers through her hair he deepened the kiss. A soft moan escaped her as his tongue sought and gained entry. She wrapped her arms around his neck standing to press her body against his. His hands tightened around her waist as his trailed kisses along her jaw and down her neck. "What do you say we move this somewhere more comfortable," he whispered as he reached for the belt of her robe.

"Oh yes," she answered breathlessly, sliding out of his embrace and dropping her robe as she moved from the kitchen to the living room. She glanced over her bare shoulder, "Coming?"

"Give me a minute," he growled as he followed her pulling off his tee shirt as he went. He caught up with her at the door of the bedroom and grabbed her by the waist. He lowered his mouth to hers and kissed her, slowly, deeply. The kiss stirred the hunger in both of them and he picked her up and carried her to the bed.

"How romantic," she whispered as she wrapped her arms round his neck.

"Romantic hell," he growled as he lowered his mouth to nibble the soft flesh of her shoulder, "I didn't want to give you a chance to get away."

Later as they lay side by side on the rumpled bed, Jack traced the soft curve of Sam's lips with his fingertip. "So lovely," he whispered, "so soft." He pressed a kiss to her temple and hugged her tight. He reached up and ran his hand through her hair, "I love you Samantha Carter."

Sam touched her lips to his, "And I love you John O'Neill."

The End.
